The Mazda CX-9 vs. Honda Pilot | Valparaiso, IN

Compare the Mazda CX-9 to the Honda Pilot at Kennedy Mazda

When you're shopping for a three-row SUV that offers all the bells and whistles to enhance your daily driving experience, Mazda has come up with a pretty decent idea of what that looks like: the Mazda CX-9. It comes standard with a powerful engine choice, impressive handling and loads of standard and available equipment. Most SUVs in its class offer similar packages but they don't quite attain the level that the Mazda CX-9 offers. To see how this Mazda SUV stacks up against competition like the Honda Pilot, swing by our dealership and we'll take you through every part of the CX-9 and show you why it's the SUV that we prefer for our family.

Mazda CX-9 vs Honda Pilot

  • Engine Options: Both models keep their lineups simple with one engine throughout. The Honda Pilot comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 while the Mazda SUV is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged affair.
  • Power Output: Both models have impressive powertrains built to move a larger vehicle around. While the Honda model does offer more horsepower than the Mazda, it doesn't even come close to delivering the same pounds per feet of torque that the CX-9 does. That means more capability for when you need it.
  • Fuel Economy: With the turbocharged engine, the Mazda CX-9 provides 22 mpg while driving in the city and 28 mpg while out on the highway. The Honda Pilot manages pretty good efficiency as well but no configuration matches the output of the CX-9. Both SUVs utilize a 19.5-gallon tank for fewer stops at the gas pump.
  • Exterior Size: The Honda Pilot is wider than the Mazda SUV which affords you an easier job of fitting into those tighter parking spots. It also has more ground clearance than the Pilot, so when you go over bumps and rough roads, the CX-9 will manage them better.
  • Interior Comforts: A three-row SUV is often known for its large interior and both these models offer over 135 cubic feet of interior space for your passengers to stretch out in. The Mazda really shines with the available legroom it offers with more than the Honda Pilot offers in both the first and second row.
  • Infotainment System: Mazda has been in the business of providing capable vehicles that offer plenty of luxuries for their drivers. Their three-row option comes standard with a seven-inch MAZDA CONNECT™ touchscreen display while Honda has an eight-inch but only at higher trim levels.
  • Interior Amenities: Whether you love getting cozy at the wheel of your SUV or you just enjoy easy convenience, there are loads to be found with the base model of the Mazda CX-9. It comes standard with a three-zone automatic climate control system, remote keyless entry system and a push-button start. The Honda Pilot offers similar features but they are often locked away behind higher trim levels and will cost you more. Tons of features become available with the Touring trim like heated outside mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers, whereas only the highest trim levels of the Honda Pilot make those same features available.
  • Safety Features: Both models offer excellent safety features to help you keep an extra pair of eyes on the road at all time. Mazda does you one better by offering Blind Spot Monitoring system with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as standard on every trim level. The Honda Pilot also offers this feature but only on the EX trim and above.
